History

The Assembly's fundamental functions are to enact new laws, amend or repeal existing laws, and oversee the executive. Members are elected for a term of four years, concurrent with federal legislators and the governor of the state. The Assembly convenes for plenary three times a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) in the assembly complex in Makurdi, the state capital, while committee and other oversight activities are conducted outside this period. The 10th Assembly was inaugurated on 5 June 2023, with Memberga Alfred Aondover as speaker; the 9th Assembly was led by Titus Uba as speaker and Christopher Adaji as deputy speaker.
