About
The Young Progressives Party (YPP) is a social-democratic political party in Nigeria. It was created to challenge the two major parties of the time, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), and its manifesto calls for efforts to improve welfare, fight for social justice and provide equality of opportunity for all citizens. The party won one seat out of the 109 seats in the Nigerian Senate during the 2019 general elections. Its colours are yellow, red and green, and its slogan is "Service to the people!"
History
The Young Progressives Party was formed in 2016 as a political association. On 7 June 2017, the association was officially registered as a political party. The party was formed on the principles of social democracy and inclusive governance. In 2019, Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was the party's presidential candidate, and Ifeanyi Ubah became the first YPP candidate to win a seat in the National Assembly, for the Anambra South senatorial district. In 2022, several politicians defected to the party from the PDP and APC.
