About
The People's Redemption Party is a social democratic and democratic socialist political party in Nigeria. It was created by supporters of Mallam Aminu Kano after his withdrawal from the National Party of Nigeria, and it is described as the longest surviving political party in Nigeria's history.
History
The party was formed following a series of political conferences aimed at creating a party that could transcend tribal boundaries. After a brawl between Malam Aminu Kano and members of the Northern People's Congress in September 1978, a section of mostly Marxist intellectuals broke off and formally declared the founding of the PRP on 27 September 1978. Aminu Kano was elected the party's national president, and in 1979 the party captured two of 19 states. The original party was banned after the 1983 military coup led by General Muhammadu Buhari. In the Fourth Republic, the party resurfaced under Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa but could not gather the same level of support. Balarabe Musa stepped down as chairman in August 2018 and Falalu Bello was announced as the new chairman.
