About
The Labour Party (LP) is a social democratic political party in Nigeria. It aims to promote and defend social democratic principles in order to achieve social justice, progress and unity. Its colours are red and green, and its logo is a wheel with a man, a woman and a child at its centre. The party has seats in the House of Representatives, the Senate, state houses of assembly and governorships. Its headquarters is in Abuja, and its general secretary is Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, with Sen. Nenadi E. Usman listed as chairman in the infobox.
History
The party was formed in 2002 as the Party for Social Democracy, established by the Nigeria Labour Congress. Its name was officially changed to the Labour Party after the 2003 general election. In 2007 Olusegun Mimiko won the Ondo State governorship under the party's banner, serving two terms from 2009 to 2017 before returning to the PDP in 2020. After national chairman Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam died in 2020, the party faced a leadership crisis, and Barrister Julius Abure was elected national chairman by the National Executive Council in 2021. In 2022 former Anambra State governor Peter Obi joined the party and became its 2023 presidential candidate. In 2023 the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria backed the party, and Alex Otti became its only elected governor, in Abia State. In January 2026 the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that Julius Abure's tenure had expired and recognised a caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman pending a convention, a decision the Court of Appeal upheld in April 2026.
