Ministry of Women Affairs
About
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is a part of the Federal Ministries of Nigeria that promotes the development of women and children in Nigeria. It is headquartered in Abuja and is currently headed by Honourable Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. The ministry works on women's issues and gender equality, including health programmes and policies for women, efforts to fight sexual violence, female genital mutilation and child marriage, and policies protecting people living with HIV/AIDS from workplace discrimination. It is organised under a Minister, a Permanent Secretary and several directorates, and works alongside the National Centre for Women Development.
History
The ministry first originated in 1989 following support from a United Nations decree to focus on women's issues and gender equality in developing nations. It was initially called the National Commission for Women until 1995, when it became the official federal ministry it is now, reflecting progress towards the Beijing Platform of Action. Originally headed by the First Lady, the ministry is now led by an Honourable Minister, currently Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
