Ministry of Power

About

The Federal Ministry of Power is an arm of the Federal Government of Nigeria responsible for providing social amenities such as electricity across the country. It is guided in this mandate by laws and policies including the National Electric Power Policy of 2001, the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005, the Rural Electrification Implementation Strategy Plan of 2016, and the Roadmap for Power Sector Reform of August 2010. The Ministry carries out its work through seven agencies, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the Rural Electrification Agency, and the National Power Training Institute. Its headquarters is in Abuja, in the Power House.

History

The ministry was once part of a combined Ministry of Power, Works and Housing. Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos State, served as minister of that combined ministry from 2015 to 2019. In 2019 Saleh Mamman was appointed as a new minister. The President later decided to split the ministry into two, appointing Saleh Mamman as minister of Power and Fashola to handle Works and Housing.
