History
The ministry has overseen a series of ministers since 1957, when Ayotunde Rosiji first held the post. Its responsibilities are divided among departments covering family health, public health, planning and research, hospital services, food and drugs, and health system strengthening. Several agencies and parastatals operate under its oversight, including the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, the National Health Insurance Authority, and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which was established in 2011.
