About
Shinkafi is a town and Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Nigeria. It has an area of about 674 square kilometres and a population of 135,649 according to the 2006 census. It lies about 116 kilometres from the state capital, Gusau, and shares boundaries with Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State, the Niger Republic, Zurmi, Maradun and Raba.
History
The settlement grew from early groups of settlers, including traders, herders and hunters, who gathered in a valley near a river. The community was named Shinkafi after the Hausa word for rice, which its people cultivated in large quantities. Over time the town became the headquarters of the Isa Native Authority, then of Isa Local Government Area in the former Sokoto State, and later of Shinkafi Local Government Area in Zamfara State. The town was upgraded to an emirate by the first executive governor of Zamfara, Sen. Ahmed Sani, after being a district headship from 1835 to 2000.
