Sardauna
About
Sardauna Local Government Area is a local government area in the extreme southeast of Taraba State, Nigeria. It is synonymous with the Mambilla Plateau, which is dotted with many towns and villages. Its capital is Gembu, an ancient Mambilla settlement, and the area is divided into eleven electoral wards. The area has a relatively cool climate because of its altitude, and it is linguistically diverse, with about two dozen local dialects and languages, mostly Mambilla languages along with other Bantoid, Jukunoid and Grassfields languages. Business communities from other ethnic groups, including Hausa, Kanuri, Igbo, Banso, Kambu and Fulani, can be found in its commercial centres.
History
Sardauna was formerly known as Mambilla. The name Gembu is a corruption of Gelmvu, the name of an ancient monarch of the area.
