About

Gassol is a Local Government Area in Taraba State, Nigeria, with its headquarters in the town of Mutum Biyu (also written Mutumbiyu or Mutum Mbiyu) on the A4 highway. The area covers about 5,543.9 square kilometres and is home mainly to Fulani, Wurkun, Tiv and Jukun people. It is regarded as the hub of agriculture in Taraba, with Fulani herders rearing large cattle herds and Tiv and Jukun farmers growing yams. The Dan-Anacha yam market is said to be the biggest yam market in Taraba State. The LGA is divided into 12 wards, including Gassol, Gunduma, Mutum Biyu I and II, Nam Nai, Sabon Gida, Sarkin Shira, Sendirde, Tutare, Wurojam, Wuryo and Yarima. Fishing is widely practised by the Jukun Wanu people in Tella, one of the major towns in the LGA. The northern border of the area is the Benue River, and the Taraba River flows north through the area to join the Benue.

History

Due to ethnic conflicts in the area, there have been attempts to rename Dan-Anacha to Kwararafa. These proposals have been rejected by some people who believe the renaming could be intended to favour a specific ethnic group.
