About
Donga is a town and Local Government Area on the Donga River in Taraba State, Nigeria. It was officially created as a local government area in 1991. The area has an estimated 177,900 people from several ethnic groups, including the Tiv, Chamba, Ichen, Hausa and Fulani, and most residents practise Christianity or Islam, with a minority following traditional beliefs.
History
The modern settlement of Donga was established around 1830 by Nubunga Dozinga, a Chamba leader who led his people to fertile plains near the Donga River. The Chamba established a centralized monarchy whose paramount ruler holds the title Gara Donga, and the Chamba built city walls and gates during the reign of Garkiye I. During the British colonial period Donga was part of the Muri Division, and it became a Local Government Area in September 1991 after the creation of Taraba State from the former Gongola State.
