History
Kware was established in 1812 by Abd al-Salam, a respected Hausa scholar and one of the leaders of the Sokoto jihad. After the Sokoto Caliphate was founded and Sokoto town built, governing responsibilities were divided among jihad leaders, and Abd al-Salam was given oversight of seven districts. He was dissatisfied with this arrangement and was invited to Sokoto by Shehu Usman, who allowed him to found Kware near Sokoto so he could be monitored by Muhammad Bello. Followers of Abd al-Salam moved to Kware, causing the town to grow rapidly in population and farmland. Ongoing tensions with the Sokoto government made Kware a hub for those aggrieved with Sokoto. In 1817, during the reign of Sultan Bello, these tensions led to a full revolt by Abd al-Salam against the Sokoto Caliphate. Sokoto's forces invaded Kware, and Abd al-Salam fled to Bakura, where he died of an arrow wound in 1818.
