Oyigbo
About
Oyigbo, also called Obigbo by locals, is a town and Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. It lies about 30 kilometres from the port city of Port Harcourt and 25 km from the city of Aba. The LGA includes the Obigbo district with the communities of Asa, Komkom, Obeama and Oyigbo, and the Ndoki district with communities such as Afam, Afam Nta, Mgboji and Okoloma. The area is rich in crude oil and natural gas, and several oil companies operate there. Other economic activities include farming, trade, crafts and a range of local businesses, hotels and commercial shops.
History
Oyigbo was created as a Local Government Area in 1991. Sir Precious Oforji was elected Chairman of the Oyigbo LGA in 2008, and EZE Mike Nwaji was enthroned as the traditional king of Obigbo in 1998. Because of its location between Rivers State and Abia State, the two states contended over which should rightfully own the Obigbo Local Government Area. After several deliberations, an agreement was reached that Obigbo would remain part of Rivers State.
