History
The article gives little formal history of the local government itself. It notes that oil exploration in the area began in 1958, and that Shell Petroleum Development Company has been the dominant oil operator there since the late 1950s. The article also describes political unrest, including a 1990 demonstration at Umuechem in which 50 people died and an impeachment of three legislative council members in January 2009.
