Afijio
About
Afijio is a Local Government Area in Oyo State, Nigeria, with its headquarters in the town of Jobele. It covers an area of 722 square kilometres and is governed by an elected chairman and 10 councillors, one from each of its 10 wards. The local government area is mostly inhabited by Yoruba people, who are largely farmers growing crops such as maize, yam, cassava, groundnut, fruit, cocoa and oil palm. Its major towns include Aawe, Akinmoorin, Fiditi, Ilora, Iware, Jobele and Ore lope.
History
In 1989, the then-Federal Military Government separated the former Oyo Local Government Area into autonomous council districts, which led to the formation of the current Afijio Local Government. The council has been established three times: a Provisional Authority was set up in 1964, the area was merged with Oyo Local Government in 1981, and it was re-established as an autonomous political entity in May 1989. The name Afijio is an acronym for Awe, Akinmoorin, Fiditi, Ilora, Imini, Jobele, Iware, Iluaje, Oluwatedo and Ojutaye, the major towns that make up the local government.
