Osogbo
About
Osogbo is a city in Osun State, Nigeria, and became the state capital in 1991. It is the seat of the headquarters of both Osogbo Local Government Area and Olorunda Local Government Area. The city is a trade centre for a farming region and is known for its Osogbo School of Art and for tie-and-dye (adire) cloth production.
History
According to tradition, Oba Olarooye and his people settled at Ipole Omu, but long dry seasons forced a search for better land, and the hunters under Timehin discovered the River Osun. Olarooye and his people then moved to Ode-Osogbo, where Olarooye built his palace at Idi-Osun and Timehin built the Ogun shrine at Idi-Ogun. Yoruba tradition also holds that many people fleeing the Fulani invasion after the fall of old Oyo settled at Osogbo, increasing its population through migration.
