Iwo
About
Iwo is a city and Local Government Area in Osun State, Nigeria. Its people are part of the Yoruba kingdom and are traditionally believed to have originated from Ile-Ife. The city was once part of old Oyo state and later became one of the major townships in Osun State. Iwo is governed by a local council headed by a chairman, and it is the seat of the Oluwo of Iwoland, a paramount ruler over more than 30 Kings. The area is home to several educational institutions, including Bowen University, along with media outlets such as Reality Television Service and a number of community-based organisations. Its satellite towns include the Aiyedire and Ola-Oluwa local government areas.
History
The Iwo people are believed to have migrated from Ile-Ife sometime in the 11th century. The city was formerly part of old Oyo state and was later separated to become one of the major townships in Osun State. Iwo's first mosque, which served as a place of worship and Islamic education, was built in 1655. Iwo East and Iwo West Local Council Development Areas were later created out of Iwo for administrative convenience and better development planning, funded by the Government of Osun State.
