Ejigbo
About
Ejigbo is a Nigerian city in the central region of Osun State and the capital of Ejigbo Local Government Area. It lies about 35 kilometres north-east of Iwo, 40 kilometres north-west of Osogbo and 95 kilometres north-east of Ibadan, and is part of the Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo federal constituency. The town is a major Yoruba community whose economy is based on farming, including food crops, cash crops and modern poultry and fish farms, and on a central weekly market. It is also known for its strong diaspora ties, particularly to Côte d'Ivoire, and for the annual Orisa Ogiyan festival.
History
According to oral history, Ejigbo was founded by Akinjole Ogiyan, a descendant of Oduduwa, who left Ile-Ife with Oranyan together with his brothers to establish their own town. Around 1835 Ejigbo came under Ibadan, and detachments from the town assisted the Ibadan army in several wars between 1840 and 1866. In 1934 the Ogiyan and other district obas were made members of the divisional council under the Ibadan Native Authority. Ejigbo South and Ejigbo West Local Council Development Areas were later created out of the Ejigbo area council by the Government of Osun State.
