Okitipupa
About
Okitipupa is a town in Ondo State, Nigeria, and the headquarters of the Okitipupa Local Government Area that bears its name. It is part of the Ikale-speaking area of Ondo State and is a major town with Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, which began academic sessions in 2010–11. Its residents are mainly farmers, growing oil palm, rubber and cassava, and the town has a long-established market serving traders from across Yorubaland. The town has facilities including a specialist hospital, a magistrate court, a high court, a police area command, an army barracks, commercial banks and numerous schools, making it the central town for much of Ondo South senatorial district.
History
Okitipupa was historically known as Ode-Idepe, and the newer name is said to derive from the Ikale words for hilly and red, reflecting the town's elevation and red soil. It was a district in colonial times before Nigeria's independence in 1960. The modern market was built in 1979 under Herbert Kuewumi, when he was executive chairman of the old Okitipupa Local Government, and was rebuilt in 2009 under Governor Olusegun Mimiko. Many of the town's roads were constructed under Governor Olusegun Agagu.
