About

Idanre is a historic town in Ondo State, Nigeria, and the headquarters of the Idanre Local Government Area that bears its name. The town sits at the foot of the scenic Idanre Hill, which has notable cultural and environmental significance and attracts many tourists. The residents are mainly Yoruba speakers, and most work in farming and trading. The town lies about 20 km southeast of Akure, the state capital. Idanre is noted as Nigeria's largest cocoa-producing area.

History

Ufe Oke was founded by Olofen Aremitan from the Oduduwa royal household, who is said to have left Ife with his followers carrying a brass crown (Ade Ude). The town is made up of three localities, Atosin, Alade and Odode (Ode Idanre), with Ode Idanre the largest. The people lived in the Idanre hills for more than eight hundred years before descending into the plains in 1923; the old site remains accessible by a 660-step ascent.
