Ijebu Ode
About
Ijebu-Ode is a city and Local Government Area in Ogun State, South West Nigeria, located about 110 km by road northeast of Lagos and within 100 km of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the historic and cultural headquarters of the Ijebu kingdom and home to Sungbo's Eredo, one of the largest ramparts in West Africa. The area is known for its entrepreneurial people and is a trade centre for a farming region where yam, cassava, grain, tobacco and cotton are grown.
History
Ijebu-Ode has been the capital of the Ijebu kingdom since pre-colonial times and was established as the chief town by the 16th century. The name combines the names of AJEBU and OLODE, two leaders of the original settlers. In 1891 the Ijebu blockaded the trade route into Lagos, which led to a British expeditionary force in 1892. After the British-Ijebu War, also known as the Battle of Imagbon, the Awujale surrendered and the Ijebu kingdom was later annexed to the colony of southern Nigeria.
