About

Katcha is a local government area of Niger State in central Nigeria, with Badeggi as one of its major towns, located on the A124 highway in the west of the area. The area has a postal code of 912 and covers about 1,681 square kilometres. The local government area is made up of ten wards, including Katcha, Edotsu, Gbakogi, Bakeko, Sidi Saba, Dzwafu, Badeggi, Bisanti, Essa and Kataeregi. Its council is the elected government body for the area, and the community is headed by a traditional ruler known as Sheshi Katcha.

History

The Katcha local government council was created in 1981 by the Federal Government to bring government closer to the grassroots. It was carved out of the then Gbako Local Government, which was headquartered at Bida. Katcha Local Government began operating in 1982 with its headquarters at Katcha. During military intervention the council was merged back into its former parent local government, Bida, until December 1996, when the Abacha Administration created new states and local government councils. This gave rise to the present Katcha Local Government council with federal backup. Since then, leadership has changed from one person to another, either democratically decided or appointed as a sole administrator or caretaker committee chairman.
