About

Surulere is a city and local government area on the mainland of Lagos State, Nigeria, covering about 23 square kilometres. It is bordered by Yaba, Mushin and Ebute-Metta. The area is known for its mix of residential neighbourhoods, commercial streets such as Western Avenue and Adeniran Ogunsanya, and open markets, as well as industrial establishments at Iponri, Coker and Iganmu. It is also home to the Lagos National Stadium and the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

History

During the rapid urbanization of Lagos, the city expanded west of its lagoon to include present-day Surulere. Families from different regions of Nigeria have historically settled there, and in the nineteenth century emancipated African Brazilians and Cubans, known as Aguda or Saros, also settled in the area. The New Lagos neighbourhood, also known as the Surulere Re-Housing Estate, is among the first public housing projects in Nigeria. In 1977 Surulere hosted FESTAC 77, the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, held between 15 January and 12 February 1977.
