About

Somolu (also spelled Shomolu) is a neighbourhood in Lagos and a local government area in Lagos State, Nigeria. Its administrative headquarters is on Durosimi Street, and it is part of the Lagos East Senatorial Zone. The area is known for its large printing industry and has faced challenges including poor sanitation, high rent, poverty and youth criminal subculture. The local government is divided into 8 communities under 8 administrative wards, and its residents are mostly Yoruba. The area is largely residential, with most of its land used for housing rather than other industries.

History

Somolu local government was formed on May 27, 1976, from the former Mushin District Council after traditional rulers and upper class figures in the Somolu region lobbied for autonomy. It was originally named Mushin East Local Government Area. In recent years the area has grown rapidly, largely because of its printing business, which has drawn many residents and businesspeople and significantly increased rent costs. The rapid industrialisation and urbanisation of the area have brought both benefits, such as increased capital and industry, and problems, including overcrowding, poor infrastructure, unemployment and poor health.
