Ajeromi-Ifelodun
About
Ajeromi-Ifelodun is a major Local Government Area in Badagry Division, Lagos State, Nigeria. It is best known for encompassing the vibrant and culturally influential district of Ajegunle, and is one of the most densely populated urban areas in Africa, serving as a diverse melting pot for ethnic groups from across the country. The area is located directly west of Apapa and east of Satellite Town, Lagos. The LGA covers approximately 12.49 square kilometres of mostly reclaimed marshland and is known for its markets, including Boundary, Wilmer and Odunade, its proximity to the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port, and its role as a talent hub for footballers and musicians.
History
Ajeromi-Ifelodun was formally established as a Local Government Area on October 1, 1976, following nationwide local government reforms aimed at decentralizing administration in Nigeria. Its name combines the communities of Ajeromi and Ifelodun, reflecting the settlers who moved to the region during the mid-20th century expansion of Lagos. It was originally part of the old Ojo Local Government Area before being carved out to provide focused governance for the growing Ajegunle axis. The area's growth is linked to the development of Apapa, the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port in the 1970s, which turned the former marshy outskirts into a residential hub for port workers and migrants. Ajegunle later became known for the Galala dance and Swo music genres and for grassroots football.
