About
Irepodun is a Local Government Area in Kwara State, Nigeria, with its headquarters in the town of Omu-Aran. It is populated mostly by the Igbomina people, who are Yoruba with roots in Ife, Oyo and Ketu. The area includes many villages and towns, among them Idofian, Okanle, Jimba Oja, Koko-Araromi, Ilota, Arugbo, Igbo-Owu and Amodu. The area is known for its Yoruba cultural and historical significance. It is home to the Esie Museum, the first museum established in Nigeria, which holds a large collection of soapstone images and hosts a religious festival every April. The local people also enjoy Dadakuada music and traditional festivals.
History
Much of the Ifelodun domain was overtaken by the Afonja/Alimi era and annexed to the present Ilorin enclave. The people of Irepodun trace their roots to Ife, Oyo and Ketu. The Esie Museum opened in 1945 and was the first museum to be established in Nigeria.
