It covers an area of 480 square kilometres and had a population of 54,850 at the 2006 census. The area has a postal code of 252. The local government includes several communities, among them Aare-Opin, Isolo-Opin, Isare-Opin, Osi, Ikerin-Opin, Oke-Opin, Epe-Opin, Owaatun-Opin, Etan, Obbo-Aiyegunle, Obbo-Ile, Eruku, Ajuba, Isapa, Koro and Ejiu.
History
When the local government was created, the choice of its headquarters caused a legal dispute and communal unrest. The present headquarters was a compound from Isolo-Opin rather than a long-established community in Opin land. A landmark judgment later declared Isolo-Opin entitled to be the headquarters, as opposed to Araromi Opin. The judgment relied in part on the fact that there are 12 Opins, children of one father, and Araromi was not among them. The article notes that changing the name has been difficult because of political issues and legislative processes.
