Daura
About
Daura is a city and local government area in Katsina State, northwestern Nigeria. It is regarded as the spiritual home of the Hausa people and is one of the traditional "seven true Hausa states" (Hausa Bakwai), ruled by the Emir of Daura. The area has a centre of formal and informal education, a traditional royal palace called Kangiwa, and a trading history centred on crops such as sorghum, millet, groundnuts and cotton.
History
According to legend, around the 9th century Bayajidda arrived at Daura after crossing the Sahara, killed a snake that blocked the well, and married the local queen Magajiya Daurama. In 1805, during the Fulani War, Daura was taken over by the Fulani warrior Malam Ishaku, who set up an emirate. In 1903-04 the British installed Malam Musa, king of Zango, as the new emir of Daura. The traditional emirate was part of North-Central state after 1967, was incorporated into Kaduna State in 1976, and became part of the newly created Katsina State in 1987.
