History
Minjibir was founded in the early 18th century by the Fulani of the Yerimawa clan, and was initially administered by a Hausa titleholder known as the Turakin Romo. After Usman dan Fodio's jihad and the establishment of the Emirate of Kano, Emir Suleimanu awarded the title of Turakin Romo to a student of his who was a member of the Yerimawa clan. Minjibir was historically a centre of textile production, particularly handweaving. In 1949 the Kano Native Authority set up a large workshop there called the Kano Textile Training Center, which later closed. By 2018 handweaving had moved from Minjibir itself to the outlying village of Gidan Gabas, where young men were keeping the tradition alive.
