History
The founders of Lere are described in the article as Fulani clans who traced their origins to the Takrur region and later migrated through Timbuktu, Niger and Zamfara before settling in the Bauchi and Zazzau territories. The Emirate of Lere was established in 1808 by Malam Muhammadu Dabo Titi as a vassal state of Zazzau, following the Shehu Usman Dan Fodio's jihad. Its headquarters were moved several times before being established at its present site in 1870 by Sarkin Lere Muhammadu Dankaka. Following the colonial takeover of the Northern Emirates in 1903, the vassalage system was abolished and Lere was reduced to a district under a hereditary rulership system in 1905.
