Igabi
About
Igabi is a Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State in northern Nigeria, one of 774 local government areas in the country. It is administered by an Executive Chairman and covers 12 wards, including Rigasa, which is one of the most populous wards in the state. The area's economy depends largely on agriculture, and it is a notable producer of maize for Kaduna State as well as animal feed. The population is predominantly Muslim, and the area hosts several schools, a military training institution, and a national open university campus.
History
Research by the DRPC Nigeria (Development Research and Projects Center Nigeria) indicates that Igabi was founded by a Qur'anic scholar from Kukawa in Borno state, who settled near Rigachikun to teach Qur'an and Islamic studies. The settlement grew around a man named Igabi, a scholar named Mallam Ahmadu, who arrived with more than a hundred students, and was later joined by students from neighbouring villages. In 1907 Igabi was officially recognised as a district under the Zazzau Emirate by the British colonial government of Northern Nigeria, with Turaki Babba of Zazzau as its first district head. Leadership later passed to Dan Madami Zubairu, then Dan Madami Umaru, and then Bello Sani. The current local government capital is Turunku.
