Kazaure
About
Kazaure is a city, emirate and Local Government Area in Jigawa State, Nigeria. The Local Government Area is administered by an elected local government chairman, while the emirate is headed by the Emir of Kazaure, a traditional ruler.
History
Kazaure was first settled around 1300 CE by a group of Hausa hunters led by a warrior called Kutumbi, and the settlement took its name from a phrase used by one of the new arrivals. It was not until the arrival of the Fulani that an administrative system was established in the area. The city became the emirate's headquarters in 1819 under Dan Tunku, a Fulani warrior and flag bearer of the Fulani jihad leader Usman dan Fodio, and the emirate was later recognized as independent of Kano after arbitration by Sultan Bello. During the reign of Emir Dambo from 1824 to 1857 the emirate was enlarged and became strong and independent. In 1912 the British arrived and Emir Muhammad Mayaki surrendered peacefully, so Kazaure became part of the new Nigeria without bloodshed.
