History

Before the arrival of the British in 1901–1902, Owere town (anglicized as Owerri) was made up of five villages: Umuororonjo, Amawom, Umuonyeche, Umuodu and Umuoyima, collectively known as Owerri Nchi Ise. The indigenes trace their ancestry to a man called Ekwem Arugo. Under British influence and colonization in the early 1900s, Owerri town became the headquarters of Owerri Division and later the old Owerri Province. When Imo State was created on 3 February 1976, Owerri city was chosen as its capital. On 15 December 1996 Owerri city attained municipal status.
