About

Ohaji/Egbema is a Local Government Area in the south-western part of Imo State, Nigeria, known for its oil resources. Its headquarters is in Mmahu-Egbema, and it is made up of three political districts: Ohaji East, Egbema North, and Ohaji West. The local government has seventeen autonomous communities, including Egbema, Umuagwo, Oloshi, Assa, Awarra, Mmahu and Obuomadike. The area is served by postal code 464.

History

Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area as presently constituted was created by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida's administration in the August 27, 1991 presidential proclamation, carved out of the former Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta L.G.A. A power plant project was initiated at Mmahu Egbema in 2006 under President Olusegun Obasanjo to ease hardship in many Imo State communities. The project was abandoned for more than five years before the administration of Rochas Okorocha visited the site in June 2015 to mobilise contractors and ensure completion within ten months. The planned plant was to have an installed capacity of 380.7 MW (ISO) and 338 MW (net).
