About

Ideato South is a Local Government Area in Imo State, South-eastern Nigeria, with 23 autonomous communities and its headquarters in the town of Dikenafai, the source of the Orashi River. The area has a land area of 88 square kilometres and recorded a population of 159,879 at the 2006 census. Its people are mainly farmers and traders, growing cash crops such as oil palm, raffia palm, groundnut, cocoa and rubber, and food crops such as yam and cassava. The local government is headed by an elected Local Government Chairman, and the area is known for its traditional culture, chieftaincy titles, and the Orashi River which serves communities for drinking, washing and other uses. The area is also home to K. O. Mbadiwe University in Ogboko, formerly known as Eastern Palm University.

History

Ideato South's headquarters is in Dikenafai, and the area has faced erosion problems, with 26 erosion sites reported in September 2000 by the then local government chairman, Chief Ethelbert Okwaranya. An intervention programme was launched to address gully erosion in communities such as Umueshi and Umuezealla-Ogboko. The Eastern Palm University in Ogboko was established in 2016 by the Nigeria University Commission as a state-owned university and was later renamed K. O. Mbadiwe University by the Imo State government.
