Kaltungo
About
Kaltungo is a town and one of the 11 Local Government Areas of Gombe State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is located in the western part of the Local Government Area on the A345 highway. The local government covers an area of 881 square kilometers and is home to a mix of Christians and Muslims. The area is known for its agriculture, where sorghum, millet, beans and rice are grown, and for raising animals such as camels, cows, pigs and goats. Trading, hunting and craft production are also important. Kaltungo is also known for its snakebite treatment and research centre, and it hosts several cultural festivals.
History
The Kaltungo Snakebite Hospital was established because the area has a variety of snakes, particularly in Northern Nigeria. It was later upgraded to the Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre, Kaltungo, through the intervention of the Sustainable Development Goals office and the Gombe State Government. The centre serves snakebite victims, including those from Duguri District in Bauchi State, particularly after a flood along the River Benue in October 2012 increased the population of venomous snakes.
