Funakaye
About
Funakaye is a Local Government Area of Gombe State in Nigeria, with its headquarters in the town of Bajoga. It is bounded in the east by the Gongola River and Lake Dadin Kowa, beyond which lie Yobe State and Borno State. The area is inhabited mainly by the Fulani people, and farming, including the cultivation of sorghum, maize, beans and millet, is a significant economic activity. The LGA is rich in minerals such as bentonite, limestone, coal, gypsum, gold, gemstone and uranium, and the French company Lafarge has operated there since the 1990s. The area is considered the least developed LGA in Gombe State, and it is served by a network of public primary and secondary health facilities, including Funakaye General Hospital in Bajoga.
History
The town got its name from the two Fulani words "funa" meaning "East" and "ka'e" meaning "rocks", which together mean "East rocks". The Emir of Funakaye, Alhaji Mu'azu Muhammad Kwairanga III, died at the age of 45 on Saturday, 27 August. He was succeeded by Alhaji Yakubu Muhammad Kwairanga IV, appointed by the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on 21 November 2022.
