History
The Tangale people claim to have settled Billiri after migrating through Borno State, moving from places such as Sanum Kede and Kupto due to tribal wars. Tangaltong, one of the seven clans in Tangale, is where Billiri, Bare and Kantali are located. The traditional ruler of the Tangale people of Billiri is known as Mai Tangle. In March 2021, the appointment of a new Mai Tangle by the Gombe State governor, following the death of the previous ruler in January 2021, sparked violent protests in Billiri over claims that the governor did not accept the candidate chosen by the kingmakers, and the unrest led to loss of life and property.
