Bwari
About
Bwari is a city and local government area in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. Its original inhabitants are the Gbagyi-speaking people, and its paramount ruler is the Esu, also known as Sa-bwaya. The area hosts institutions including the Bwari Area Council Secretariat, Bwari General Hospital, the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, JAMB headquarters, and Veritas University. Politically, Bwari Area Council is led by an elected executive chairman, with ten elected councilors representing the ten wards.
History
The history of Bwari is traced back to the seventeenth century, when a Zaria-based hunter came to the area with his family. The name is said to derive from a place called Bwayape, meaning 'pound here', later becoming Bwari. With the establishment of the FCT in Abuja, many changes occurred, including the turbaning of Musa Ijakoro as District Head of Bwari in 1976 and his elevation to Sarki of Bwari with second class status in 1997 by the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory. The Esu's stool was later elevated to third class to calm tensions, but disputes between the Gbagyi and Koro communities continued, and in December 2017 a communal clash over the chieftaincy dispute left two people dead and the Bwari Main Market burnt.
