Abaji

About

Abaji is a town and local government area in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. The Abaji Area Council is the area council furthest from Abuja and occupies approximately 1,100 square kilometres. As a gateway to the Federal Capital Territory, it is a fast-growing area with a notable influx of people moving in search of new means of livelihood. The council includes land inhabited by the Bassa and Egbura peoples, with Gbagyi, Ganagana, Hausa and other groups also present. Farming and trade are highly valued in the area, and the Abaji main market serves as a platform for buying and selling a wide range of goods.

History

The Abaji Area Council was created in 1986. The first settlers in the area were Gbagyi, Bassa and Egbira/Egbura people, before the Usman Danfodio religious war reached the region. After the kingship throne was won by the Egbura people from the Bassa people, the Egbura ruled the people, while the Hausa retained the spiritual position of Imam for the Muslim community. The Abaji kingdom, headed by the Ona of Abaji, is the oldest traditional institution in the Federal Capital Territory. The land was formerly under the old Koton Karfe kingdom, but agreed to join the Federal Capital Territory for developmental purposes. In 2014 the then-chairman, Hon. Yahaya Garba, received an award for the most ethical responsible local government in the FCT, and in the February 12, 2022 chairmanship election Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi of the All Progressives Congress became chairman.
