About

Oji River is a Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, covering an area of 403 square kilometres. Its headquarters is in Oji River Urban Settlement, and the area includes towns such as Inyi, Achi, Awlaw, Akpugoeze and Ugwuoba. It borders Awka North LGA in Anambra State, Umunneochi LGA in Abia State, and Awgu, Udi and Ezeagu LGAs in Enugu State. The area is also known for the Oji River Thermal Power Station, a smaller power station built before Independence, and for a long-running leprosy rehabilitation settlement, along with a police college that trains police cadets and other security personnel.

History

The Oji River Thermal Power Station was built in the Southeast of Nigeria before Independence in 1960. It was initially designed to produce 10 MW of electricity using coal transported from Enugu, and after the Nigeria-Biafra civil war it was upgraded to 30 MW. The plant reportedly last generated power in 2004, and the Nigerian government has debated recommissioning it. Oji River town has one of the largest and oldest leprosy rehabilitation settlements in the south-east. It was originally set up by English missionary churches in the 1930s, and the Nigerian government later assisted the settlement, which is owned by the Church Missionary Society, and built a Leprosy Control Centre there.
