About
Nsukka is a city and a Local Government Area in Enugu State, Nigeria. It shares a common border with Edem, Opi, Ede-Oballa, and Obimo, and is the home of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The area is an agricultural and trade centre known for yams, cassava, corn, taro, pigeon peas and palm produce, and for traditional weaving. The local government headquarters is located in the city. Nsukka is the second largest city in Enugu State, and its people are known for traditional religion, the Omabe masquerade festival, and the Ndishi/Nna tradition on marital fidelity.
History
According to oral history, Nsukka traces its origins to Asadu Ideke Arụmọna, whose sons founded the communities that make up Nsukka town. When Local Government Areas were created, the Nigerian government grouped Nsukka with neighbouring communities to form Nsukka Local Government. Under colonial rule Nsukka was the headquarters of a colonial division and later of the Nsukka province, and the wider cultural area was known as the Nsukka Senatorial Zone until 1996, when Ebonyi State was created from Enugu and the zone was renamed Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
