Emure
About
Emure, also called Emure Ekiti, is a town in Ekiti State, Nigeria, and the seat of Emure Local Government Area. It is considered one of the more prosperous towns in Ekiti and is made up of four ancient quarters: Oke Emure, Odo Emure, Idamudu and Ogbontioro. The local economy depends on farming of cowpea, cocoa, pepper and plantains, along with bead production, fabric weaving and trade in local markets. Education is highly valued, with several public and private secondary schools in the area.
History
The Emure Kingdom traces its royal lineage to Oduduwa, the legendary progenitor of the Yoruba people, through his son Okanbi and grandson Oranmiyan. The founder of the kingdom was Fagbamila Obadudu, a descendant of Oranmiyan, who established Emure as a royal centre and one of the sixteen crowned kingdoms of Ekiti. His two sons, Abenimota and Adumori, became the progenitors of the two royal houses, and since the late twentieth century the kingship has alternated between these two lineages. The town became better known after the king's grandson, Adewale Ogunleye, joined the NFL with the Chicago Bears.
