Akoko-Edo
About
Akoko-Edo is a local government area in Edo State, Nigeria, with its headquarters in Igarra. It covers an area of 1,371 square kilometres and is home to the Akoko people, who are split between Ondo and Edo States and are largely recognised as Yoruba. The area includes many towns and villages across the northern part of Edo State.
History
The Benin conquests during the reign of Oba Ozolua (1483–1504) established the first settlements in the region, while other peoples, including the Bida, migrated there in search of fortune. The war between Oba Esigie and the Attah of Idah in 1515–1516 is thought to have contributed to the migration of the Igbirra and Idah peoples from the north and east into the area. The first local government chairman was Chief Joshua B. Mayaki.
