About

Uvwie is a principal urban Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria, lying along the Warri River. It is one of the 24 Urhobo kingdoms and borders the city of Warri. The term Uvwie refers to the indigenous people of the area, their language, and the kingdom itself. Effurun, the traditional and political headquarters, is now often used to refer to the urban area as a whole, forming what is known nationwide as the Effurun metropolis.

History

The introduction of British colonialism in the late nineteenth century brought Uvwie into modern Nigeria, which was created by the amalgamation of the protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1914. Uvwie was a clan until 1954, when it became a kingdom with the introduction of monarchy and Johnson Ejuvwiekoko Edjekohwo Eruohwo was crowned as Eruphwo II, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, on 1 December 1954. Political reforms later made Uvwie a local government in Delta State, governed by the Delta State government, the Uvwie Local Government, and the Uvwie monarch.
