About

Burutu is a town and Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria, located on the coast of the Niger Delta on two sides of the Forcados River, a channel of the River Niger. The people of the area are mostly of the Izon ethnicity. The Local Government Area comprises several towns and villages, including Burutu-Forcados, Iduwun, Ogulagha, Obatebe, Ngbilebiri/Main, Operemor, Seimibiri and Toumo. Its economy has long been tied to river and sea trade and to port activity.

History

Burutu served as a link between river transport and the sea when the Royal Niger Company established a base there in the late 19th century. In the first half of the twentieth century the town expanded through the activities of the Niger Company and later UAC, which acquired the company's trading interests and assets at Burutu. Before the twentieth century the Niger Company's main port was at Akassa, but after the water channel to the sea silted up the company moved its operations westward to Burutu close to Forcados. The port of Burutu was owned by UAC and was later acquired by the Nigeria Ports Authority.
