About

Boki is a Local Government Area in Cross River State, Nigeria, with its capital at Boje. It borders the Republic of Cameroon and is known as a commercial centre for agricultural commodities such as cocoa, coffee, timber and palm products. The area is largely covered by rainforest and the Afi mountain range, and is home to the Boki people, who give their name to the area. The Local Government Area is noted for its rugged terrain, traditional festivals, music and markets, and for wildlife habitats including the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, which is managed by the Cross River State Forestry Commission.

History

Boki was created as a Local Government Area on 28 August 1991. In 2001, six autonomous communities in the area protested the state's refusal to create a separate Boki North council and threatened to join neighboring Cameroon. In July 2000, female genital mutilation was made illegal in Cross River State by the state government in an attempt to stop violence and abuse against women. In 2010, communal war broke out between the Nsadop and Boje communities over farmland, causing an estimated 230 million naira in property damage, about 400 deaths and affecting approximately 6,000 people.
