History

Most people from Abi come from the Bahumono tribe or Agbo subgroup of Igbo. The Bahumono are one of the largest tribes within Abi Local Government and include eight villages: Anong, Ediba, Usumutong, Abeugo, Afafanyi, Igonigoni, Ebom, and Ebijakara. They are historically known to have migrated from Hotumusa, an old town in the hills of Ruhura. The Agbo community of Itigidi traces its origins to a sacred tree called Ekomoti, from which the first Itigidi man is said to have emerged. The community developed from a settlement called Lebama (Ekpolodol), and the tree remains sacred in the land of Itigidi.
