About

Gwoza is a city and local government area in Borno State, Nigeria, located as a border town about 135 kilometres south-east of Maiduguri. The terrain is rocky and hilly, with the Gwoza Hills forming part of the Mandara Mountains, a natural barrier between Nigeria and Cameroon. The local government area includes towns such as Gwoza, Kirawa, Pulka, Ashigashiya, Ngoshe and Limankara, along with many villages. The area is home to several languages, including Cineni, Wandala, Mafa and Waja.

History

The Gwoza area has suffered considerable violence linked to the Islamist insurgency in Nigeria. Boko Haram insurgents arrived in the area in 2009 from Maiduguri and, in 2014, an influx of fighters fled the Sambisa Forest. Many residents were displaced by fighting, and in March 2015 the Nigerian Army announced that it had recaptured the town of Gwoza from Boko Haram.
