About

Chibok is a town and Local Government Area in Borno State, in the southern part of Nigeria. It covers an area of 1,350 square kilometres and is mainly inhabited by the Kibaku (Chibok) ethnic group. The local government area is best known internationally for the 2014 abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls from the town by the militant group Boko Haram.

History

Chibok is one of the sixteen local government areas that make up the Borno Emirate, a traditional state in Borno State, northwest Nigeria. In April 2014, nearly 300 girls were abducted from Chibok by Boko Haram, and the town was attacked again in May 2014. In November 2014 it was reported that Boko Haram had taken control of the town and implemented Sharia law; the military announced a few days later that it had recaptured the town. In January 2015, the BringBackOurGirls group raised concerns over plans by the Independent National Electoral Commission to exclude Chibok and some communities under Boko Haram control from receiving permanent voter cards for the 2015 general election.
